Dad worked for IFR Systems, in
Wichita. They made electronic test equipment, whatever that means.
He now works for Metal-Fab, Inc. in Wichita. They make vent pipe
for things like the water-heaters and furnaces in houses. Not very
high-tech, he says, but it is a very nice company with great people.
It is a smaller company than IFR but he says he kind of likes that.
When he first started working there the main computer systems were
constantly crashing and he worked very hard in the first 3 months to
completely change out their old, worn-out systems with new ones that
haven't crashed yet. It was a lot of fun and hard work but he says
it was worth it.
When he worked at IFR, if just a little thing went wrong his MIS
department would get yelled at and it really upset him and made things
very stressful. In contrast, on his 2nd day at his new job he ran an errand for work at lunch and
when he got back, the receptionist stopped him to ask him about the
pictures of us on his desk and talked to him for 10 minutes before saying
"Oh, by the way, the system crashed at lunch and we've all been
waiting on you to return to fix it". He just laughed, got it running again and thought
how thankful he was to be working for a pleasant company with really
nice people.
Busy in last minute Y2K preparations, Dad is spending some extra time
at work these days finishing some upgrades and retiring old systems that
were put off due to other big projects. He says he's looking forward
to his 2nd year with the new company.
