| This summer we let Dad take a biking vacation with his dad while we went to visit Michelle Miller Kobayashi in Connecticut. Dad went and rode a section of the KATY trail and then came home to study for 2 of his CNE tests. Visiting Michelle and Ky During our visit we went hiking in the mountains near their home, hiked around a reservoir on a trail. We also visited Madison, CN where we enjoyed the sun and sandy beaches. Hayden and I really enjoyed hunting for shells. If you have ever seen the movie Mystic Pizza, we ate there in Mystic, CN and celebrated Mom's birthday. We watched a real working drawbridge while eating ice cream at the drawbridge ice cream factory. We loved watching all of the boats! Probably the highlight of our trip was Michelle's dog, Atticus. We loved him! And he loved taking us for walks. We shared all of our food with him. Our plane trip there and back was a real joy. Wichita to Memphis, Memphis to Detroit, Detroit to Hartford with full luggage, one parent and 2 small boys. Mommy was "super-airline-mommy" the whole trip. And we were little angels. No, really.
Dad went biking with his 'Biker Dad' in Missouri. The KATY trail is an old railroad bed that they are converting to a biking/hiking trail from St. Louis to Kansas City. It goes about 2/3rds of the way currently. Dad and Grandpa Bruce left their van in Booneville, MO and rode from Booneville to Jefferson City and back on a two day trip. They carried all of their clothes and tools with them in bike panniers.
Dad would recommend riding the KATY trail to anyone. Because it is a railroad bed it is by definition fairly flat and easy. It is also very scenic since it avoids the main highways and takes you from small town to small town along the old railroad. There are many larger towns offering deals for bikers and families riding through. Due to its location there are also many towns with great history to learn and explore. |
